Men's D1 Lacrosse Power Rankings 2025
The ACC has four legitimate championship contenders. So does the Big Ten. Here is how the field stacks up entering the 2025 season.

Men's D1 lacrosse in 2025 has never been deeper or more competitive. The era of one or two programs dominating from wire to wire is essentially over. The transfer portal, improved coaching across the sport, and geographic expansion of the talent base have created a landscape where eight to ten programs can legitimately claim national championship aspirations heading into any season.
1. Maryland — The Standard
Maryland's combination of elite recruiting, best-in-class facilities, and a program culture that simply doesn't accept losing seasons makes them the consensus choice at the top. The Terps' returning production in the midfield is the best in the country. Their defensive continuity gives them a baseline that most programs can't match.
2. Virginia — The System Advantage
Lars Tiffany's offensive system at Virginia creates advantages that don't show up easily in recruiting rankings. The Cavaliers play a pace that few teams can sustain defending, and the coaching staff excels at developing players within that system. Virginia is dangerous in any matchup because the system creates advantages that pure talent comparisons miss.
3. Notre Dame — The Rising Power
Notre Dame has positioned itself as a genuine national power. The Fighting Irish's recruiting class in 2025 is among the best in the country, and the returning talent from their strong 2024 season provides a core of experienced players. Notre Dame's path to the final four runs through the ACC, which is brutal — but they have the depth to navigate it.
4. Syracuse — Always Dangerous
Syracuse has the athletes, the recruiting base, and the coaching to be a national championship contender every year. The variable is always consistency — can the Orange put together a sustained run through a tough ACC schedule without a stumble that costs them seeding? When they do, they're a final four team at minimum.
5. Penn State — The Big Ten Power
Penn State has developed into one of the premier programs in the country. The Nittany Lions' home-field environment is among the most electric in the sport, and the coaching staff has done exceptional work developing recruits into elite college players. Penn State enters 2025 with a real chance to make a deep tournament run.
Programs 6–10
Duke, Cornell, Princeton, Denver, and North Carolina round out the top ten. Duke's recruiting class is outstanding. Cornell has the most experienced roster in the Ivy League. Princeton is dangerous in the tournament's single-elimination format. Denver has become a legitimate national program despite its geographic distance from the traditional lacrosse corridor. North Carolina has elite talent but needs the right moment for everything to click.
